Story Elements!

Every story needs a few things in order to be complete. Without these elements we would not have a story! They are:

Genre
The type of story or literary work.
Author
The person who writes the story.
Illustrator
The artist who draws the pictures.
Title
The name of a book, poem, story or song.
Main character
The most important person or animal in the story.
Secondary characters
They support or help the main characters.
Setting time
When the story happens (past, present, future).
Setting place
Where the story happens.
Plot
The sequence of events that take place in the story. Also known as the beginning, middle and end of a story.
Problem
The situation that happens in the story.
Solution
How the problem is fixed.

Whenever you read a story try to identify each of the story elements. This will help you understand what you are reading!

Use a graphic organizer to make notes as you read.
